Abound Solar™ Thin-Film PV Modules Receive UL Certification
Manufacturer One of the First to Receive UL Listing Under UL 1703 for CdTe Thin-Film
Loveland, Colo. (October 27, 2009) – Abound Solar (formerly AVA Solar), a manufacturer of low-cost, thin-film photovoltaic (PV) solar modules, today announced that Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has certified the company’s AB1 series of PV modules in accordance with UL 1703 Third Edition. Abound Solar is only the second PV panel manufacturer employing cadmium telluride to pass this rigorous standard.
UL certification requires an extensive set of electrical and mechanical tests of the modules over several months. Under the UL Witness program, testing occurred at both Abound Solar’s internal compliance laboratory as well as at UL’s PV Laboratory in San Jose, Calif. The modules were exposed to several rounds of testing including accelerated stress testing under various climate conditions, mechanical impact tests, wind and snow load, fire test, rain, and arcing among others. Modules tested passed all the requirements to receive certification. In addition to the module testing, UL certification also included an on-site inspection of the Abound Solar production facility in Longmont, Colo.
“UL Certification is an important milestone for Abound Solar modules and for the company itself,” said Julian Hawkins, Abound Solar Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing . “The rigorous testing our products had to undergo in order to receive certification is a testament to the quality and superiority of Abound Solar modules. As we continue to reduce production costs, this certification gets us one step closer to meeting the demands of consumers and accelerating clean energy usage globally.”
Abound Solar™ modules are labeled with the CE mark, certifying that the product has met European consumer safety and health requirements, along with the newly approved UL mark, which will increase adoption of Abound Solar modules worldwide. The company is also in the process of testing according to IEC certification through TÜV Rheinland, an independent testing, assessment and certification company.
